The elaborate procedure necessary to amend Rule 9 of New Town Kolkata (Building) Rules 2009 has been initiated,” a senior NKDA official said. The plan should be such that the tree can have its natural growth as it grows bigger. According to the plan chalked out by NKDA, there should be one tree cover for each 80 square metre of plot. It may be mentioned that NKDA has already begun work in full swing for implementing a Tree Library on a 3 acre plot, one km away from Biswa Bangla Gate (Kolkata Gate). The Tree Library was inaugurated on July 31 as a prelude to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s green campaign ‘Save Green Stay Clean’, launched on August 1. Banerjee had taken part in a walk from Birla Planetarium to Nazrul Mancha to stress the necessity of increasing and saving the green cover in the city to curb pollution. “The idea behind the Tree Library is to gain knowledge of trees usually found in the urban landscape and the aim is to familiarise today’s children and young adults with trees that we see all around in cities. We believe that to save trees, you need to know them first and then love them,” said Debashis Sen, chairman of NKDA. The tree library would also later have fold-up camp reading sessions in open air, when weather permits. NKDA is also running a successful green project “Tall Tree Nursery”, in joint collaboration with the state Forest department’s Wasteland Development Corporation.last_img read more
