Navarro County Justice Center(CORSICANA, Texas) — A Texas woman was arrested this week after she failed to seek medical attention for a young girl who accidentally burned herself with scalding hot water and died, police said. The woman called 911 on Saturday morning about 12 hours after the girl, believed to be 4, had pulled a large pot of boiling water down from the stove at their residence in Corsicana, some 50 miles southeast of downtown Dallas. The child was unresponsive after suffering burns to her face, chest, arms and other parts of her body, according to a press release from the Corsicana Police Department. The woman told officers she wasn’t in the room at the time of the incident and treated the child herself rather than seek medical care. First responders pronounced the child dead at the scene, police said.ABC Dallas affiliate WFAA-TV reported the woman is the girl’s stepmother. Police did not immediately respond to ABC News’ request for comment.Preliminary results from an autopsy conducted by the Navarro County Medical Examiner’s Office indicated the child died due to injuries sustained from the boiling water, according to police.Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for the woman and took her into custody on Monday afternoon, police said. The woman, identified as 42-year-old Juana Marquez, is being held in Navarro County jail on a $50,000 surety bond, according to jail records. She faces a second-degree felony charge of abandoning or endangering a child, police said. It’s unclear whether Marquez has retained a lawyer. Copyright © 2019, ABC Radio. All rights reserved.
Approximately 1,000 Guatemalan Police and Army personnel have formed a group to capture alleged Guatemalan criminal leader Eduardo Villatoro, aka Guayo, alleged leader of a gang that massacred eight police officers, and kidnapped and murdered a police chief in the west of the country, official sources reported. On June 13, eight police officers were murdered at a police station in Salcajá municipality, 200 km to the west of the country. Moreover, Police Chief César García was also kidnapped and later dismembered, and his remains were found a week after. “I call for Villatoro to go to the Police, since we are not withdrawing until we find him. We’ll find him, either by hook or by crook,” Minister of Interior Mauricio López told the press. The official added that support was requested from federal authorities in Mexico, as well as from state authorities in Chiapas, in order to prevent Villatoro from escaping the country. So far, 13 gang members have been captured, including the alleged author of García’s dismemberment, as part of so-called Operation Dignity. By Dialogo July 23, 2013 On June 20, the Police announced that two members of the gang had been captured, including Donaldo Villatoro, brother of the alleged criminal leader. Although the operation encompasses the west side of the country, it mainly entails Huehuetenango, where Villatoro’s gang operates in association with certain Mexican cartels.

6 October 2014 Exploration drilling at the Platreef platinum-palladium-gold-nickel-copper project, South Africa. (Image: Ivanhoe Mines )Construction work at Ivanhoe Mines’ Platreef Project will resume after South Africa’s Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) gave final approval of mining right for the development of the mine in Mokopane, Limpopo. The mining licence, given for an initial period of 30 years, authorizes the Canadian mining company to mine and process platinum-group metals, nickel, copper, gold, silver, cobalt, iron, vanadium and chrome at its Platreef discovery, on the Northern Limb of the Bushveld Complex.Announcing the finalisation of the granting of the mining licence on Wednesday, 5 November, Ivanhoe Mines’ Executive Chairman Robert Friedland said the execution of the mining licence will enable the immediate resumption of preparations for construction at the Platreef site.“With the shared, ongoing commitments of the Department of Mineral Resources, our Broad-Based, Black Economic Empowerment partners and our supportive co-investors from the Japanese trade and industry consortium, Ivanhoe Mines’ Platreef Project is going to become a sustaining foundation of jobs and support serving the common interests of our host communities in Limpopo province,’ Friedland said.Minister of Mineral Resources Ngoako Ramatlhodi said the final approval of the Platreef mining licence shows the department’s commitment to ensure mining companies comply with South Africa’s mining laws, while attracting investment and growing the economy.“The final regulatory approval of the Platreef Project’s mining right is significant not only for the development of the project itself but it also signals the South African government’s determination to grow our country’s economy. The Platreef Project will attract foreign capital, create much needed jobs and contribute significantly to socio-economic development in areas surrounding the project,’ said Ramatlhodi.Adding, Ramatlhodi said he is confident the Platreef Project will satisfy the environmental, socio-economic as well as Black Economic Empowerment requirements as set out in South African mining law. “We look forward to a constructive partnership on this project between Ivanhoe Mines, the South African government, communities and workers,’ he said.Under a broad-based black economic empowerment (B-BBEE) structure announced earlier this year, the Platreef Project is now 26% owned by 20 host communities, employees and local entrepreneurs. About 150 000 people live in the 20 host communities that form part of the B-BBEE transaction and 187 local entrepreneurial companies, representing 333 individual shareholders, took part in the entrepreneurial subscription.Ivanplats, Ivanhoe Mines’ wholly-owned subsidiary, will work closely with the DMR to ensure that the Platreef Project’s host communities receive maximum benefits from the company’s operations, said Platreef Project’s Managing Director Patricia Makhesha.“After all of the discussions that have been held with stakeholders about these very significant benefits that will flow from the development and operation of the planned mine, we are about to begin seeing our words translated into meaningful actions,’ Makhesha said.Following the granting of the mining licence, Ivanplats will immediately halt retrenchment plans that it started at the beginning of November. Work at the Platreef site had been suspended since May this year pending finalisation of the mining licence.SAinfo reporter
[Note: Author has asked management our position on this for sites like RWW] Apple offers an afflilate program for the iTunes and the App Store. Many other online retailers offer similar features today on goods bought on the Internet, including Amazon with Amazon Associates. When first released, there were some questions on the process and payouts that have been updated in this new release, including a cookie-tracking mechanic and easier ways to reporting on activity. It sounds like Rackspace isn’t giving up and instead is innovating further in making infrastructure a click-away from the web. Will Amazon, Others Respond?RackSpace is growing it’s partner network and incentives, and is offering a sales model that rewards applications resellers, developers, and web sites. Amazon has an amazing affiliate outreach with it’s core store, we wonder if they will soon will offer more programs to attract software to bundle in infrastructure. Will more and more software come with “infrastructure inside”? Now with the Rackspace program program, resellers can receive direct rewards in the form of percentage points on the back-end and join in the financial benefits of cloud hosting.Where Did This Idea Come From?We got a chance to speak with the Rackspace team. They emphasized customer feedback and testing with beta customers as key drivers for this program. From what we can see, the developers said “pay me” and “make it simple”. And that is what Rackspace aims to offer.“As a leader in cloud computing and a company that is committed to maintaining tight bonds with our partner community, we have aimed to create one of the most compelling partner programs in our industry,” said Emil Sayegh, general manager, The Rackspace Cloud. How Does it Work for Resellers?Rackspace Cloud customers who want to buy our hosting services directly and re-sell them to their own customer base. A reseller may divide our hosting services into smaller bundles so they are able to generate a profit from their customer fees, or build an application and attach it to the Rackspace infrastructure. In a way, this model is like a reverse app-store, where instead of paying 30% like app developers pay Apple to be on iPhone, app developers get paid for bringing business to the platform. If this program takes off, it could be a signal of a major sea-change where applications developers – rather than system integrators – are the one’s being rewarded for bringing infrastructure together. And now the company has extended it’s offerings to offer a Windows product it is broadening it’s appeal even further. The new Windows beta allows Cloud Server users new and existing features including control panel and API access for create, delete, reboot, and rename functions. Showing that the cloud is encapsulating the server into common functions and administration is one move towards consolidated infrastructure. From the press release. “The Rackspace Cloud Reseller Program offers discounts of up to 12 percent for resellers selling large volumes of cloud hosting across Rackspace Cloud’s services.”This also might be a good approach to monetize great open source solutions. The software is free, but when installing it you run it on a slice of the cloud and get paid as part of the whole bundle from the infrastructure provider. How Does it Work for Affiliates?“The Rackspace Cloud Affiliate Program is designed for companies that have offerings or content that attracts users interested in a cloud hosting solution. It is offered as a text or image link from a site, blog, or tweet. Members can earn from 5 to 7 percent (depending on the total number of referrals) of a referred hosting customer’s payments for a period of up to three years.”If you see a button like this one on the web, be assured that the company presenting it participates in the revenue stream if they sign up for RackSpace. Serverless Backups: Viable Data Protection for … If you’re like most enterprise IT professionals, you have serious concerns about cloud computing. According to a new Lieberman Software 2012 Cloud Security Survey, sponsored by the Cloud Security Alliance, 88% of the 300 IT professionals surveyed believe that some of their data hosted in the cloud could be lost, corrupted or accessed by unauthorized individuals. That’s likely why 86% keep their most sensitive data behind-the-firewall.Despite those concernse, though, an equally whopping 86% believe their cloud deployment has been a success. It’s therefore not unreasonable to suspect that 100% will be back at the cloud computing trough, again and again and again. That is really good news for Amazon, which is looking to double down on selling its cloud services to the enterprise.Amazon Hires an ArmyIn a bid to drive enterprise adoption, the cloud leader looks set to nearly double its AWS salesforce, as Business Insider discovered. No doubt these salespeople will focus on moving enterprises to use Amazon Web Services beyond the test and development workloads currently in the cloud, currently the dominant type of workload enterprises cede to AWS. The goal, clearly, is to get them to move mission-critical applications to AWS.This could prove harder than it first appears, given enterprise insistence on tight Service-Level Agreements (SLAs) and the big differences between enterprise and consumer cloud requirements, as Wikibon’s Kristen Feledy posits:IT organizations are under tremendous pressure to cut costs and the “Amazon Effect” increases that pressure. The reality is many of the successful public cloud examples are characterized by a single application accessed by millions of people; whereas the traditional enterprise is made up of hundreds or even thousands of apps accessed by thousands or maybe tens of thousands of users. These are different worlds where the former is all about scale and simplicity and the latter emphasizes service levels, reliability and security.Amazon, after all, has mostly taken a somewhat blasé approach to SLAs, which Wikibon describes as “we’ll do our best – if we don’t please send us an email.”Not exactly a confidence booster for the cloud-wary CIO.Shadow IT: First Open Source, Now CloudThis is changing. Amazon recently rolled out premium support plans for the enterprise, including “white glove case routing.” To sell a premium AWS experience, Amazon’s job profiles scout for sales professionals who “possess both a sales and technical background that enables them to drive an engagement at the CXO level as well as with software developers and IT architects.” In other words, Amazon recognizes that it is the developers and architects that pull cloud computing into the enterprise, but it is the CIO who will bless this “shadow IT.”After all, it is shadow IT that has been selling the enterprise on Amazon for years. By now, just every enterprise is using the cloud, be it from Amazon, Microsoft, Rackspace or others, as progressive IT professionals have looked to the cloud to get things done despite friction from internal bureaucracy. For those paying attention, this is precisely how open source succeeded: currying favor with developers until its spread was so pervasive within the enterprise that CIOs were forced to accept it, and signed sales contracts with Red Hat and others to mitigate legal risk and improve service.Hence, Cloudscaling’s Michael Grant is arguably correct to suggest that rather than fight shadow IT and its inexorable march to the cloud, CIOs should recognize shadow IT as “a forward thinking testbed for IT innovation.” If Grant is right, that testbed suggests a future in the cloud, both for dev/test and mission-critical workloads, driven by the promise of higher convenience and lower costs, but really about increased innovation. But it also suggests that Amazon has been right to first focus on the enterprise’s new kingmakers: developers. This is how open source won. It’s how the cloud is winning, too. Days after hapless residents of waterlogged areas of Patna such as Rajendra Nagar and Kankerbagh heaved a sigh of relief and with life gradually coming to terms for them, the Bihar government formed a three-member committee — from those departments primarily responsible for the waterlogging — to probe the reasons for it.The committee will submit its report in seven days and in two weeks’ time action will be taken against those responsible for the prolonged waterlogging in certain areas, State Urban Development and Housing Department (UDHD) Minister Suresh Kumar Sharma, who ordered the probe, told journalists on Thursday. The three-member committee comprises UDHD Special Secretary Sanjay Kumar, Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (BUIDCO) Managing Director Amrendra Prasad Singh and Commissioner of Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) Amit Kumar Pandey. The committee has been asked to look into certain aspects that caused the waterlogging and officials responsible for it.However, it is these three departments that are primarily responsible for maintenance of drainage system, running of pumps at sump houses and managing manpower to make the city clean and free from perennial waterlogging.“The committee will inspect all the 38 sump houses in the city…it will also submit a report on the equipment purchased by the PMC for drainage and sanitation works”, said the minister.Earlier during the prolonged waterlogging in the city, the minister had pinned the blame on BUIDCO and PMC for the problem.According to a report, ₹49 crore was spent in the last 13 years by the government just to prepare the survey map of the drainage system in Patna. The companies said to be blacklisted in other States were given tenders to complete the job.Official sources at the UDHD told The Hindu that the government still has no proper map of the drainage system for Patna.Patna Mayor Sita Sahu was at a loss for words recently when journalists asked her about the city’s drainage system and sump houses. She blamed the BUIDCO for prolonged waterlogging in certain areas of Patna. All three departments were throwing the ball in others’ courts for the unprecedented waterlogging problem in the city.“It’s ridiculous that the officials of those departments who are responsible for our week-long nightmare due to neck-deep waterlogging in Rajendra Nagar area have been made members of the committee formed by the government to probe the reasons. What more salt the government can rub on our wounds?”, fumed Rajendra Nagar resident Ashutosh Kumar, a professor of history.Rajendra Nagar residents blocked roads and staged protests on Thursday to demand compensation and adequate bleaching and fogging in the area to prevent the outbreak of dengue, diarrhoea and other water-borne diseases.Meanwhile, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is said to be holding a high-level review meeting on October 14 with officials for an “action plan” to find out reasons and for follow-up action regarding the prolonged waterlogging in some areas of Patna. “It will also be looked into who are responsible for such prolonged waterlogging and action will be taken against them”, said State Chief Secretary Deepak Kumar. The Opposition party leaders, however, alleged that it’s all noora-kushti (friendly fight) that the ruling alliance partners BJP and JD(U) are playing on the misery and woes faced by the residents of waterlogged areas. “What was the need of both the UDHD minister (who is from the BJP) to form a three-member committee when the Chief Minister himself was going to hold a review meeting with high-officials on October 14?…In fact, there is a tug of war going on between both the ruling alliance parties”, charged senior RJD leader Shivanand Tiwari.
The Wall of Indian Test team seems to be crumbling. As the Indian batsmen have been struggling on the bowler-friendly pitches of South Africa, Rahul Dravid yet again failed to contribute with the bat in both the innings in Durban. When there was a great need of him to stay longer on the crease, the Wall could not stand for a long leaving a question mark on his form. In the first innings, Dravid got out cheaply (25 runs) on a Dale Steyn delivery and in the second innings he was again bowled out by L. Tsotsobe for a paltry 2 runs. Earlier in Centurion, Dravid had scored just 14 and 43 runs in the first and second innings respectively. His poor form has been bothering captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Dravid’s performance in 2010 has not been great. He particularly failed to impress against the stronger teams in the league. Though he scored well against New Zealand and Bangladesh, he disappointed against the teams like South Africa and Australia. In 2010, Dravid has managed to score at an average of 37 against Australia, while against South Africa and Sri Lanka his average remained as low as 27 and 19 respectively.
