Lakers’ Lonzo Ball to miss second straight preseason game with ankle sprain

first_imgLAS VEGAS – A sprained left ankle forced Lonzo Ball to miss his second exhibition game and could linger through the rest of the preseason, coach Luke Walton said on Sunday morning.Ball attempted to go through practice on Saturday, but was “just limping around,” Walton said. He was quickly ruled out for Sunday’s 75-69 victory over the Sacramento Kings at T-Mobile Arena.“If you can’t run and jump there’s no reason to fight through that,” Walton said. “We are just going to keep giving him treatment and he will be day-to-day.”Ball missed out on a return to the court in the city where he rose to stardom with an MVP performance at the Las Vegas Summer League in July. The former UCLA and Chino Hills High star followed that performance with 8 points, 4 assists and 2 rebounds two nights later against Denver, but left the game when he landed on the foot of Nuggets point guard Emmanuel Mudiay after blocking Mudiay’s shot. Walton allowed for the possibility that Ball could miss both of those matchups.“I hope not,” he said, “but yeah that’s a possibility. It is different with every player. He is new to the team so we got to see how long these types of injuries take him to come back from. We’d like to have him back but again we are not going to rush him back just to try to get him out there.”Ball is expected to make his regular season debut on Oct. 19 against the Clippers.“I assume he will be back by then,” Walton said. “If he’s not ready to play basketball and really cut and move and do everything that you need that ankle … to do for you, we are not going to play him.”The No. 2 pick in the draft, Ball’s rookie season has been met with unprecedented scrutiny and anticipation. In his first preseason game on Sept. 30 against Minnesota, Ball tallied five points, eight assists, seven rebounds and a pair of steals.center_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more
