India captains on fire: Virat Kohli, Mithali Raj top ICC ODI rankings

first_imgThe reigns of Indian cricket seem to be in safe hands.On October 29, as the ICC Rankings were updated, both the Indian captains Virat Kohli and Mithali Raj came out on top.While Kohli reclaimed the top spot with a career-best 889 points, Mithali moved up one place to occupy the first position with 753 points.Kohli overtook South Africa’s AB de Villiers in the rankings and that mirrored his achievement on Sunday in the final ODI against New Zealand when the Indian captain surpassed de Villiers to become the fastest to 9000 ODI runs in 194 innings — 11 lesser than the South African.The 28-year-old Kohli, who scored 263 runs in the series against New Zealand including knocks of 121 in the first ODI in Mumbai and 113 in the final ODI in Kanpur, has reached 889 points, which is the best-ever by an India batsman.The previous highest points tally of 887 was managed by Sachin Tendulkar in 1998 and by Kohli earlier this year.In the decider against New Zealand, Kohli also became the first batsman to score 2000 international runs in 2017, beating the likes of South Africa’s Hashim Amla (1988 runs) and England’s Joe Root (1855 runs).Not just that, he became the fastest to reach 5000 runs in international cricket as captain across formats, taking only 93 innings to reach the mark. Second to him in the list is Michael Clarke who took 109 innings to reach the mark.On the other spectrum of Indian cricket, Mithali also reached the pinnacle of the rankings beating the likes of Ellyse Perry of Australia, Amy Satterthwaite of New Zealand and Meg Lanning of Australia.advertisementEarlier in the year, Mithali became the first batswoman to score 6000 runs in One-Day Internationals during India’s World Cup league game against Australia.With the feat, she became the leading run-scorer in women’s cricket having overtaken Charlotte Edwards of England.In fact, Mithali started the World Cup with a bang by becoming the first woman in cricket history to hit seven consecutive fifties in ODIs, when she scored 71 off 73 balls against England in the World Cup opener.While Kohli is incessantly on a record-breaking spree even making it the Forbes top 10 of most valuable athletes, Mithali has inspired a host of girls in India and has brought India’s women cricketers on the world map.(With inputs from PTI)last_img read more
